Defining 'Shape' in Musical Performance

LECTURE WITH PROFESSOR JOHN RINK

John Rink considers the sometimes mysterious ways in which performers create music in sound and time on the basis of the notational symbols handed down by composers. The issue of 'shape' is proposed as one means of understanding the sense of direction and coherence that can emerge in performance, whether within an individual line or across an entire piece or movement.
